Be Sober and Temperate!

The word sober in the Bible has a figurative meaning of being watchful, self-controlled, disciplined, and sound-minded.

It does not necessarily refer to abstaining from alcohol, but other things like food, tv, and social media. To be sober-minded in the Bible means to filter our trials, temptations, tests, and every thought through scripture.

The word sober comes from the Greek words nepho and sophronizo, which imply sober watchfulness and sound mind.

1 Peter 4:7 - "But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer."

1 Thessalonians 5:6 - "Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober."

Temperance is a biblical virtue that involves self-control and moderation over our passions and appetites.

It is based on God’s wisdom and moral values, and it helps us resist sin and excesses.

Temperance is related to other virtues like humility, patience, and selflessness, as it requires us to put the needs of others before our own desires.

The biblical words for temperance are “sophrosyne” in Hebrew and “enkrateia” in Greek, both meaning sound-mindedness and self-control.

Temperance, as mentioned in the Bible (Galatians 5:22-24), is a moral virtue that involves self-control and moderation.

It refers to having power over oneself, managing instincts, sublimating passions, and controlling impulses and desires.
